Shingles, or herpes-zoster, is a painful condition affecting some one million people each year. This viral infection is caused by the same virus as chicken pox. Anyone with chicken pox history could have shingles develop later in life, usually after the age of 60. The virus can remain dormant in nerve root cells, but may become active at anytime. Some of the symptoms of the disease are blisters, painful rashes, and a feeling of burning pain. Skin can become very sensitive and painful to the touch. Topical products containing emu oil may help to ease the pain as well as aiding in drying up the blisters. Unless treated properly, the blisters may leave scaring after the virus has returned to its dormant state. Stress is often suspected as one of the causes for shingles to break out. Weakened immune systems, often found in the elderly, can allow the virus to become active. People with HIV or AIDS, or anyone taking immunosuppressive drugs, are at risk in the development of shingles. Shingles is not considered to be a contagious disease, however, contact with someone with the active herpes-zoster virus could lead to chicken pox to anyone who has never had the chicken pox or taken the varicella vaccine. Alternative treatments may be an excellent choice in reducing the pain and disfigurement of shingles. Herbs and emu oil has been reported to work for a natural, safe treatment toward the relief of the pains caused by herpes-zoster, or PHN. Some people have not received the desired results from Zovirax, Famvir, and Valtrex. Try an alternative, natural treatment method with no adverse side effects.
